He was the first African American architect of note, working mainly in LA but also LV and NY.....quite some doing in the early 20th century! Using an ugly typeface, I then created hundreds of individual covid and virus shaped watercolour and ink ‘droplets’ to smear the lettering. Hidden within these is one tiny flower….the protest. To illustrate one of my personal favourite adages- “I imagine six impossible things before breakfast- Lewis Carrol” I collaged a number of scenarios, and wrote about my variation of the quote “If I achieve 6 impossible things before breakfast, then it is going to be a good day”. To be stimulating, I left the possibility that there might be only 5 on the board open to interpretation. There is a homage too there for “Only Anarchists are pretty” with the Queen playfully dancing, and apparently being held to the board using a safety pin a la Jamie….whatsiface. Famous bloke…oh, you know, there is nobody sane here, said the Cheshire Cat. The board is filled with philosophies and sound advice, and tre to the theme of ‘Want not waste not’ the collage appears to be affixed with thread, safety pins and sellotape. On the back I made notes about longevity, storage and funding, for a meeting later of our co-operative. I have lived in isolation now for 11 months. It is a narrative on situations and a commentary on uncertainty in current times, illustrated through the re-imagining of one of my favourite fairy tales. I incorporated a sense of uncertainty- who does the watcher think is at the door? What are the roles being played out? How might they differ from the old telling of the Fairy Story. “Red Riding Hood” is a story I have always loved to play with- in song, in story and in painting. It is a story I have ‘reskinned’ many times over. In 2020 I became utterly reliant on deliveries, and at the time of painting this, I have spent 10 months indoors alone. This Red Riding Hood is heavily based on 4 neighbours who bring me groceries regularly. One joy of this year has been to see how people band together, and how many adventures and friends still evolve and continue- it is as though we have returned in part to a version of the past, in order to forge ahead to the future. The Fairy story served as a starring point, but I love to play with storylines. This painting started with a peculiar idea, and it involved a conversation between the wolf and granny. “That is very assumptive” asserted Granny. “I do not like being gender stereotyped- never have. My pronouns are :They/Them” The Wolf listened attentively, and then ate them up in one gulp. They was as small and wispy as if he has devoured on tiny old woman, and so he waited and waited by the door for the other. I am not trying to be contentious, but whilst I love playing with preconceptions, and whilst it is not important to anyone else to give Granny a voice- I just hate anything that prevents connection and communication, and words matter very much. I guess the wolf is my battle for words. We need new words to express clearly what is being expressed so that communication is not stymied, and I wanted to take back something for Granny. 2020 has been a shameful year as regards some the dismissal of the lives of the elderly, as though they are somehow of less value. These expressions have echoed around in my mind, and it bothered me. What that might say about our society, if that were allowed to develop and become the norm. So the expression of Granny, and the good deeds of Red Riding Hood play often in my mind. I also like to take Red out of the role of passive victimhood. And so ideas sow seeds of ideas and ideas and …ideas. Earlier this year I took part in a comedy writing webinar- almost entirely by accident, but I wrote a comedic piece on “Red Riding Hood” in context of Covid. And producing this painting, presented in a very traditional Children’s Illustrative style, and playing with that look, it is leading me to write about Granny next, as I have always overlooked her. Thinking on “Cultural Heritage” as a theme, this has been very fun to do, playing with tropes, memes and presentations in context of such serious times. If I was not working in watercolour, I would have fixed the front bike wheel, but my challenge was to paint something that gave an impression of a world bent out of reality, with some hint of menace, in a very commonplace action, so I painting instinctively, without measurement or precision, just ‘winging’ it to see what might come. A recurrent theme in my art has always been to reflect my environment. I often paint with makeup, or collage and repurpose things around the home to that end. In what appears to be an era of ‘feeling” and ‘fake news’, it was fun to freehand angles. I like that the bike wheel could be fixed but I did not do it. He was someone who made a massive and lasting impression on my early life. In the and early 80s, I started my love affair with rock music, and growing up in rural Ireland at that time ment if you had a few records then they were played ad nauseam, and I was lucky enough to inherit Thin Lizzy records form an older brother, Lynnott’s fascination with Celtic mythology, his romantic view of Irish history, along with his sublime aggrandizement of Irishness, working-class Dublin, and being black, make his songwriting/storytelling stand out far above anything of that time. To this day Phil Lynnot is my go to on a bad day, to brighten it up. As an interdisciplinary artist, Vandame is interested in expanding ideas of language and meaning through a conceptual, queer, and socially engaged aesthetic, especially the subjects of representation, intimacy, and post-gay identity. Vandame has shown his art internationally in London, Luxembourg, and Copenhagen, among other cities. His art has been written about in The Art Newspaper, Elephant, Creative Boom, It's Nice That, among other publications, and he recently wrote an essay for Hyperallergic on the importance of the Gay Pride Flag today. In 2019, Vandame presented a participatory artwork Notice Me (LGBTQIA+ Walk) commissioned by Sculpture in the City for Nocturnal Creatures in partnership with the Whitechapel Gallery, London and he received an a-n bursary to support research in queer theory, printmaking, and scent.
